The Aquamaxx hob-1 comes up in discussion a lot and there is good reason why, it has a lot to offer, it’s powerful and convenient to set up so we decided to do a detailed review to see how it really measures up against it’s competitors.
Protein skimmers are an essential piece of aquarium equipment that can definitely benefit you, the tank water, and your fish. Organic waste can put a pretty big hurt on your fish, it can make the water cloudy and stinky, and it can make your water filter not run so good anymore. Fish waste, uneaten food, and rotted floating plant matter are not things that you want in your aquarium. The perfect solution is a protein skinner, something that will remove all of those things from the water. You can check the current price of the AquaMaxx HOB-1 here.
Our Aquamaxx Hob-1 Skimmer Review
One of the things that makes the Aquamaxx hob-1 stand out from the rest of the crowd is the fact that it can handle up to 75 gallons of tank water (You can see the current price here). It can be used for some pretty big tanks indeed. The real beauty here is that the Aquamaxx skimmer is very small. It is designed to be small enough for reef tanks and nano-aquariums, yet still powerful enough to handle bigger tanks.
It is really impressive that this thing is small enough to fit on very small aquariums, yet big enough to handle the large ones. At the end of the day, this means that you can have a really big aquarium with crystal clear water, all without the hob-1 taking up very much space. It has a really space saving design, which is something that everyone can appreciate.
The Aquamaxx hob-1 uses computer designed technology combined with state of the art filtering techniques in order to remove all kinds of organic waste from the tank water. It creates a very strong mix of air bubbles and turbulent waters to force protein and waste through the filter for easy removal. The Sicce Syncra 1.5 pump combined with the needle wheel impeller remove a whole lot of waste with barely any effort at all.
Everything that this skimmer removes from the water gets dumped into a collection cup. This collection cup can be easily removed by hand in order to get rid of all of those water impurities. You can actually move the collection cup up or down in order to adjust the foam level to wet or dry, thus dictating how much and what type of waste it removes from the water. Setting this thing up is also very easy. Simply hang it on the back of the aquarium, plug it in, and it is ready to go. Cleaning it is not much harder either.
We like the Aquamaxx hob-1 skimmer because it has the pump placed inside of it. This is great because it saves space and it makes it quiet too. This thing is also energy efficient. Most protein skimmers require a fair amount of juice to sustain their operation, but not this one.
This skimmer is also very durable which is another bonus that we can all appreciate. The whole thing is designed with very tough parts, and the shell is made out of polished cell-cast acrylic, which means that you could probably drop this thing and it still would not crack or break.
- Hang on back model – does not use space in the tank.
- Very small – space saving design.
- Extremely efficient – for tanks up to 75 gallons.
- Very durable – cell cast acrylic build.
- Removes virtually all organic impurities from the water.
- Collection cup can be easily adjusted for wet or dry.
- Only uses 11 watts of energy.
- Easy to set up and clean.
- Quite strong and durable.
- Or-ring on the collection cup does not make a 100% seal.
- Collection cup occasionally gets wedged into place.
The Aquamaxx hob-1 is a decent protein skimmer option to consider. This thing saves a lot of space, but even though it is small, it can be used for tanks up to 75 gallons in size. Also, even though it is extremely powerful and efficient at its job, it does not require much power to operate.
The advanced pump and impeller wheel do a great job at removing waste, and the collection cup is easy to clean, not to mention the wet/dry level can be easily adjusted as well. If you need a good protein skimmer to remove protein, fish waste, and other organic substances from your fish tank, this is the way to go.
