Our biOrb 105 Review

biorb 28 gallon

This is a durable 28-gallon tank that comes with a filtration system, a smart lighting system, oxygenation features, and quite a bit more.

Let’s now take a few minutes to talk about the main features that the biOrb 105 Aquarium brings to the table.

A Solid Build

One of the things which really stands out to us about the biOrb 105 is that it has an decent build. In other words, this thing is meant to be tough and durable. The aquarium itself is made out of acrylic, which is in our opinion probably the best option to go with when it comes to an aquarium material.

Acrylic is extremely strong, so much so that its impact resistance is much better than glass. The acrylic design of this tank is also scratch resistant, it is clear, and it does not distort what you or your fish see either. It is also much lighter than glass.

On a side note, everything about the biOrb 105 is built to be rugged and fairly tough, which goes for all of the internal components.

A Good Size

When it comes to beginner or children’s aquariums (we have actually reviewed our top 10 kids aquariums over at this article), having one that is not too large is always a big advantage. This particular aquarium is a 28 gallon tank, which is a decent size but not too big or too small.

The size of the biOrb 105 is ideal for a small-medium sized fish and plant population. You can easily house several fish and plants in this thing without fear of overcrowding. On a side note the tank is not the best with plant growth so you do need to be a bit selective about what plants you choose to add in.

This tank is also more than small enough to fit on a shelf, a nightstand, or even on your office desk, too. The round shape of it also helps in terms of your spatial requirements.

Energy Efficient

This tank is extremely energy efficient. Everything including the lights and filter, functions using a classic 12 volt transformer.

A Sleek Look

Another thing which we personally like about this tank is that it looks pretty awesome. It’s round goldfish bowl-like design combined with the silver base makes it look really sleek and modern.

The lights make it glow, turning it into a cool night-light. Also, all of the internal components, such as the filtration mechanism, is hidden, which helps to keep its aesthetic appeal top notch.

Filtration

Perhaps one of the best parts about the biOrb 105 Aquarium is that it comes with an decent filtration system. Every aquarium needs a good filter, and the biOrb 105 Aquarium comes with a 5 stage filtration mechanism.

First of all, this filter engages in all three major types of filtration. This includes mechanical, biological, and chemical filtration. This is an air driven filtration system which pulls the water through various types of media, removing floating debris, waste, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, colors, odors, and other toxins from the water with great efficiency.

This filter is also proven to help keep the pH level of the water constant. Now, what is really neat about the biOrb 105 Aquarium filtration system is that it also oxygenates the water as it leaves the filter, thus helping your fish breathe easy. Therefore, this filter engages in mechanical, biological, and chemical filtration, with a side of water stabilization and oxygenation too.

Something else that we like about the filter is that it comes in the form of an all in one cartridge. Instead of multiple trays, all you need is this one cool cartridge. When it comes time to replace filter media, all you need to do is replace a single cartridge, making life just that much easier for you.

Lighting

This tank comes complete with an LED lighting system. The lighting system is energy efficient, which is a big bonus do doubt. What makes this lighting system cool is that it automatically replicates the day and night cycle that we are all used to.

The lights turn on and get brighter when it is supposed to be daytime, then slowly dim and turn off during the night. This will help keep the daily cycle of your fish constant, thus replicating its natural habitat.

The only downside we discovered on the lighting is that it cannot be manually controlled which might be a negative for some and a positive for others who prefer it to be taken care of automatically to get the right day and night cycle needed.

Some Extras

To help you get started even quicker, the biOrb 105 Aquarium also comes with a bottle of beneficial bacteria liquid, which helps to kill off ammonia and nitrites. Included is also a bottle of water conditioner to help stabilize the water hardness before you introduce fish and plants into the tank (we have covered some good dechlorinators separately on this article).

  • Good size for beginners
  • Big enough for plenty of fish, but small enough for tight spaces
  • Great filtration system, all three major types
  • Oxygenation and water stabilization capabilities
  • Good lighting system
  • Easy off hood
  • Energy efficient
