When it comes to creating a really nice setting inside of your aquarium, the substrate can make quite the difference. Lots of people think that substrate is just dirt, but there is so much more to it than that. The substance at the bottom of your fish tank can go a long way in creating a great looking aquarium but it’s important to get the right one.
One that helps plants grow and flourish, plus making fish feel at home is always good too. Today we want to take a closer look at a specific substrate, this is our Tahitian Moon Sand review (you can check the current price here).
Our Tahitian Moon Sand Review
Tahitian Moon Sand by Caribsea, a well-known and trusted brand name in the world of aquarium products. Let’s talk about all of the features and benefits which Tahitian Moon Sand brings to the tank.
There is no denying the fact that Tahitian Moon Sand looks pretty cool. Its deep black color really helps to recreate oceanic scenes with lots of volcanoes. This stuff looks exactly like the black sea beds surrounding volcanoes.
Not only is black a neat color to have in an aquarium, but it does actually have the effect of makes plants and fish stand out. Sure, normal colored sand is fine, but a really bright and vibrant fish, plus colorful plants, stand out much more with a black substrate. We like how Tahitian Moon Sand has a slight glitter to it which reflects lights and colors.
Natural & Neutral
This sand is natural and safe. Yes, it is processed to a certain degree, but that is only to get the consistency right. The bottom line is that Tahitian Moon Sand is very natural and collected right out of the ocean.
This means that you can rest assured knowing that you are not putting any poisons or other chemicals into the aquarium water. Yes, this sand is black, but that is all natural. There have been no paints or dyes used in the making of Tahitian Moon Sand.
On that same note, this sand is pH neutral, which is a pretty big deal when it comes to aquariums. It will not adversely affect the pH levels in the water, something that is very convenient no doubt.
Great For Plants
Tahitian Moon Sand is good for plant growth. Ok, so it might not be quite as good as straight up aquatic soil dedicated to planted aquariums, but it still does pretty well. If your main goal is just plant growth then this one is probably a better option.
This sand is loaded with all of the necessary nutrients that plants need to grow and be healthy. We are not going to get into a science lesson here, but you can be sure that your plants are not going to need any fertilizer for quite some time to come if you use Tahitian Moon Sand.
The size of the grains is also fairly good for the roots systems of aquatic plants. The grains are small enough to pack together and give good support for any root system, but also large enough so that the roots can easily suck up nutrients. Fish also seem to like this substrate!
- No paints or dyes.
- Aquarium safe.
- Made in the USA.
- Has a great look – black and sparkly.
- Good for plant growth.
- Sand is a little oily – clouds up the water for a few days.
- Hard to use a gravel vacuum with it – gets sucked up.
- There are better options for plant growth.
While Tahitian Moon Sand might be a little hard to deal with in terms of cleaning, other than that, it’s a pretty cool substrate. It looks nice, fairly good for plants albeit not the best, and it helps you recreate awesome oceanic scenes.
